BEMC Awards 2009 Community Grants To 16 Area Groups

SUPPLY, NC, March 10, 2009, 4 pm - - - Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation is pleased to announce the winners of their 2009 BEMC Community Grants. With more than 55 community groups and agencies vying for the grants, the cooperative had a challenging review process. This year’s grants total $20,463 in funds to help local agencies and groups with a variety of programs that will make a difference in our community. BEMC started the grant program to expand our community commitment and complement the Bright Ideas grant programs for the schools.

Grant consideration is given to the following general areas of community necessity: family service programs, cultural and programs for the arts, emergency services as well as civic and community development activities. Grants are not made to individuals, but rather to organizations and range from $500-$2500.

Vice President of Customer Services Judy Gore commented, “The tough economic times are showing up in the grant applications. Our winners reflect some very basic needs in the community this year, but we still try to get a good mix of family assistance programs, health and emergency services, civic and community development activities and more. I’d like to congratulate this year’s recipients and encourage those who did not receive a grant to be sure and try again next year. And thanks to all the volunteers who make these programs work for our community.”
