Chadbourn Public Library - Character Counts!

Thanks to BEMC and a grant application submitted by Kathy Blake, library trustee, this lively neighborhood library has a new collection of exciting and inspiring books that help train and motivate young children and their parents with positive values. Instilling virtues that lead to a successful life isn't easy in our society, but children really need to learn about honesty, respect, patience and other values.

Dwayne Morgan and Katilyn Lemmons share a favorite book - "Time Remote". Ten-year old Dwayne says he learned, "Life isn't always good. You can't run away from the bad stuff, but you can learn to deal with it and keep going." Te'Andra Pridgen's favorite book is "I Am a Lion"; it tells a tale of self-esteem and respect for parents, explaining why it's important to listen to parents and other adults.

Parents are encouraged to use these books to open up discussions about topics that are sometimes difficult to approach, like bullying, anger, or cheating. The stories give examples of different scenarios and ways to handle these challenges. Other books focus on how positive character traits like being polite, responsible and a good friend make life better. While they get their point across, the books are also fun to read and that's why they're a popular choice at the library.
